What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is one of the oldest medical modalities in the world. Acupuncture is believed to have originated around 100 BC in China and is commonly used to encourage the body to heal naturally and improve its function. This treatment method uses needles that are inserted superficially into the energy points throughout your body at very precise locations. At Cohen Centers, we may incorporate this healing modality into a comprehensive treatment plan.
How Acupuncture Works
To begin to understand how acupuncture works, we start with a basic overview of meridians, or energy channels, that are located throughout our bodies. The traditional Chinese explanation of this modality offers that there are channels of energy running in regular patterns from the top of your head to the tips of your toes. Meridians are where Qi, life force energy, course freely. Every meridian supports a different organ or aspect of the body. When this energy is blocked, it can lead to pain, discomfort or dis-ease of an organ. With acupuncture needles, the obstructions can be released and cleared, allowing energy to flow once again. This helps you return to a state of balance.
A modern, scientific explanation also can be offered. The needle points located along the meridians stimulate the nervous system to release chemicals into body tissue, muscles, spinal cord, and brain. This trigger function can influence the body’s own internal regulating system, which will then modify or change the body’s experience of pain or distress. With improved life force energy and a renewed biochemical balance, the body’s natural healing abilities are stimulated and one’s physical and emotional well-being are enhanced.
What to Expect During Your Appointment
People experience acupuncture in different ways, but most patients feel little to no pain during the treatment. It is important to know that acupuncture needles are not hollow and are typically superficially inserted. You might feel a slight sensation when the needles are inserted. These sensations range from warmth or tingling to heaviness or a brief ache in the treated area. Many people describe the experience as deeply relaxing.
One of the many benefits of acupuncture is that it is very safe, with very few side effects. The most common complaint is minor localized pain at the point of insertion which typically disappears immediately upon the removal of the needles. All of the needles are individually packaged and are never reused.
What to Expect from the Results
Acupuncture treatments are completely customized and tailored to your individual needs. Generally speaking, if the problem is acute and minor, improvement can be felt after a single treatment, and may only need 3-5 treatments to resolve. With chronic, long-standing conditions, it may require ongoing treatments to notice improvement. Your personal plan will be mapped out and discussed with you prior to beginning treatment.
Typically, treatment is recommended initially at twice per week. If your condition is painful and acute, it may be recommended to receive treatments three times per week. Biweekly treatments tend to achieve faster relief with longer-lasting effects, compared to single, weekly treatments. Treatments are needed less often, as a result. Eventually, some patients will move to occasional maintenance, as recommended by your provider.
At Cohen Centers, we see acupuncture as an adjunct service that can have a positive impact for our patients who are on comprehensive treatment programs. Speak with your provider to learn more.
