It is estimated that roughly 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men aged 50 years and over are at risk of an osteoporotic fracture. In fact, an osteoporotic fracture is estimated to occur every three seconds worldwide. The most common fractures associated with osteoporosis occur at the hip, spine, and wrist. The likelihood of these fractures occurring, particularly at the hip and spine, increases with age in both women and men. What Is Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis or “porous bone” disease, is a condition characterized by low bone mass and high rate of bone density decline. This debilitating disease manifests with age, but has a higher chance of triggering based on certain lifestyle choices. Those suffering from osteoporosis have weaker skeletal frames and frequently experience fractures and broken bones.

What Causes Osteoporosis?

Certain ethnicities, body structures, and those advanced in age are at a higher risk of developing osteoporosis. While the cause of the disease is in part due to one’s genetic makeup, several environmental factors can also play a big role in the onset of this disease. Being underweight, smoking tobacco, and frequently exposing one’s body to heavy metals can all be contributing factors.
